#1234 fixed Some header fields cannot be edited. mutt-dev "Adam M. Costello" <flea.amc+1@…>
Description
Package: mutt
Version: 1.3.28-1
Severity: wishlist

-- Please type your report below this line

Apparently, some header fields, like References and Date, cannot be
edited, even when edit_headers is set. If I add a Date: field, it gets
clobbered; if I add a References field, it gets removed.

I don't see any way to configure things so that I can edit these fields.
Shouldn't it be possible?

If it's not going to be possible, can the complete set of uneditable
fields be listed in the manual, with a pointer to that list from the
$edit_headers section?

Thanks. And by the way, Mutt is awesome!

Subject: discards some changes made through $EDITOR in edit-headers mode
Date: Sun, 4 May 2003 13:09:06 +0200

Hi,

I forwarded a message to a mailing list because the person answered in a
private mail instead of sending the answer to the list.

To get the mail sorted right into the thread, I edited References: in
manually as I had set edit-headers on and thought I could edit it in
$EDITOR.

After qutting vim and sending the mail, References: ist lost, though.

That is bad..

Regards,

Rene

Could you include an 'if' statement and/or variable-matching in patterns?

(An 'if' statement could just call the pattern-matching code)

Both would make mutt much easier to do strange stuff with.

#1284 fixed Problems with current opportunistic STARTTLS behaviour mutt-dev "Andrew McDonald" <andrew@…>
Description
Package: mutt
Version: 1.4.0-2
Severity: normal

-- Please type your report below this line

I originally report this on mutt-dev on 15 Feb 2002, nothing has happened
as yet (this bug report also applies to current CVS) so I'm reporting it
through the BTS so it doesn't get totally lost....

The current starttls behaviour in mutt can only provide opportunistic
encryption, and protect against passive attackers.

The ssl_starttls setting essentially gives opportunistic encryption - if we
use imap (port 143) and the server advertises STARTTLS we try to do it.
However, an active attacker could of course change the unauthenticated
capabilities advertised by the server.

If you want to be sure of using TLS/SSL then you can specify imaps (IMAP
over SSL/TLS on port 993). There is also an imap_force_ssl setting. If you
have this set and then specify imap it essentially changes it to imaps (IMAP
over SSL on port 993 unless another port is specified).

If you work this through you'll realise that it is not possible to make sure
it uses TLS while using imap/STARTTLS. :-(

If we want to keep ssl_starttls with its current meaning, I think an
improved behaviour would be that if imap_force_ssl is set with 'imap' as the
protocol and ssl_starttls set then it should do STARTTLS or fail (or maybe
try imaps on port 993). As an alternative, I sent a patch to mutt-dev on 23
Feb 2002 which added an ssl_force_starttls which will cause the connection
to fail when using imap:// and STARTTLS isn't advertised.

I'm not sure I fully understand the purpose of the current imap_force_ssl.
It may stop you accidentally connecting unencrypted, otherwise it doesn't
appear to do anything that using imaps:// or {hostname/ssl} won't solve.
